Two songs? Just two unfinished songs?
12 February 2005
Well, I've been back a week and rarely had time to do anything. Work has been just a little bit intense...
But I really have to face up to the fact that the point of this project was to go away for two weeks, write seven or eight songs and record them, while the result has been two complete songs partially recorded, and a couple of ideas for two more.
So now what?
Well, there's no point having gone this far to leave what I have done unresolved, so I've decided to finish what I started and do a full arrangement and production number on the two songs I've got. As for the two ideas, we'll see...
This decision is made slightly more complicated by the fact that I managed to delete all the vocals and guitars I'd recorded for 'Keep on'. Yes I know this sounds ridiculous, but how was I to know that all the audio tracks for 'Keep on' were stored in a folder called 'Untitled Project' instead of the 'Keep on' folder! Always look inside folders before deleting them folks.
Anyway, I've been re-recording the guitar parts in odd moments this week, and tomorrow I plan to re-do the vocals. Then I can start working on proper arrangements and production.
In the meantime, here are a couple of snippets (in mp3 format) of the demo recordings made at the end of the two weeks. It'll be interesting to see how much these change when I have a chance to do them properly.

Oh, by the way, so far on the strength of these demos I've been compared to The Proclaimers, Morrissey and Richard Thompson. Probably by people who don't like The Proclaimers, Morrissey or Richard Thompson.
If you want to play the comparison game, you can email me and I'll compile the results.

In case there's anyone else who reads this and you all know each other I'll introduce myself. I'm Sam and I used to play with Jim 30 years ago. (Now there's a scary sentence!)
I had been wondering if nearly 30 years away from Scotland had changed Jim's accent, whether he'd turned into a Manc. Obviously not.
Keep On: if the clip has the join between the two ideas (see day 6) then I think it shows, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The drums sound fairly convincing but oddly I'm not so convinced by the bass.
50th: I'm not sure about the lyrics at the beginning - something a little stilted about the first couple of lines - but I like the guitar intro and the anticlimax. The drums are less convincing on this - could be a little snappier somehow. I like the bass part though.
Looks like it takes longer than two weeks to record an album when you're out of practice. :-)

Shite. I am as a glass without the darkly.
Keep on: a guitar riff I've been playing around with for months, and a vocal tune based around some two note chords in the verse. The verse is in A minor and the riff in D minor. The chorus had to facilitate the modulation .
'Keep On' verse
Riff to verse was solved by a D bass in the verse, only resolving to A in the chorus. And chorus to riff was solved by moving towards an A sus at the end.
Well spotted on the bass! The bass is a synth and most of the arrangement is still to be written. I put in basic parts initially just to test my theories.
Ill get back to 'I'm back' back end of tomorrow.
Thanks Sam, it's all going in...

Well, tomorrow or next week sometime...
The drums in '50th Anniversary Edition':
This is a difficult one; I'm using a multi-mic kit out of Battery which is great for a 'live' sound but doesn't have the weight in the kick that I like. '50th' really needs a great thump at the beginning of every bar.
But I'm working on it.

I don't think it's the sound of the drums, it's more the timing. I've been listening to the clips again and I still can't put my finger on it. The band on Keep On is reasonably realistic; the band on 50th doesn't quite sound together somehow - the drummer just isn't playing as well, just a shade too far behind the beat to be cool and laid back. Needs a bit more energy and precision.
